___THE PHOTO DOCUMENTARY DATABASE [FOTÓADATBÁZIS]___ The photo documentary database at the 1956 Institute contains so far descriptions of 6700 typical photographs of Hungarian history between the First World War and the reconstruction after the 1956 Institute. A start has also been made on exploring the photographic documents of the inter-war period. The descriptions, which are freely available on the Internet, include the subject of the picture, when and where it was taken, who took it, and who owns the rights to it (inventory number, where it is held). The pictures include portraits of the main public figures in the period, especially politicians and writers, but including scientists, scholars, artists and sports people. Especially interesting are the Interior Ministry and police pictures from the Historical Office, to do with the trials after the 1956 Revolution and those sentenced to death, for which they are often the only means of identification. Most of the pictures show events. Some record the main political events of the period. They include official propaganda pictures of agricultural collectivization or portraying Hungary as an iron and steel producer, and pictures of daily life after the war and in the 1950s. Others record events and sentencing during the show trials. The pictures of the 1956 Revolution trace all the events: the initial demonstrations in Budapest and the provinces, the fighting, the ruins of Budapest after the bombardment, and the victims of the volleys fired outside Parliament and in provincial centres. Most of them originally belonged to private persons, who passed them to public collections such as the Photograph Archive of the Hungarian National Museum. However, they also include some series taken by foreign correspondents, including Jean-Pierre Pedrazzini, who was killed during the revolution, or the world-famous photographer Erich Lessing. The database is constantly being expanded. For further information, contact Réka Sárközi at the 1956 Institute.
